Birchbox is facing an issue. Where there have been a multitude of posts online like This One; there is another major reason that subscriptions waiver, and that's competition. First-to-Market is a concept that doesn't always hold up anymore. Brand recognition, however, is the number one reason a company will or won't survive.
That said, for the most part I really like Birchbox. I think the idea of the men's box may even be more compelling than the ladies' - I've gotten knives, charging cables, and even awesome underwear from these boxes - albeit at 2x the cost of the womens'.
My idea would be to build out a kiosk network across airports, and possibly at convention hotels and properties. Load them up with travel-sized products (Birchbox's specialty) and even have some starter boxes that are conveniently loaded with a range of travel products (market research here, probably toothpaste, deodorant, and a charging cable seem like a good place to start).
More to come. Stay tuned.
